Fix faint or cut-off thermal prints
Two knobs fix almost every thermal printing complaint: darkness for faint output, and printable width for content cut off at the edge. Both are per-printer settings in the studio.
Steps
Print the calibration page
On the printer’s page in the studio, run a calibration print. It prints width rulers and darkness steps so you can read the printer’s real limits off the paper.
Match the paper and printable width
A 58 mm roll prints about 48 mm across; an 80 mm roll about 72 mm. If text is cut off on the right, the profile’s printable width is set wider than the printer can reach — set it to 48 or 72 mm.
Raise the darkness
If prints are faint, raise darkness one step at a time in the printer profile and reprint. Cheap paper often needs a higher setting.
Clean the print head
Still faint? Wipe the thermal head with isopropyl alcohol and try fresh paper — old thermal paper fades and prints grey.
Why the printable width is smaller than the paper
The print head never covers the full roll: there is a mechanical margin on each side. Designing for the printable width (48 mm on a 58 mm roll, 72 mm on an 80 mm roll) is the difference between a receipt that looks right and one that loses its last column.
When the printer is fine but the design is not
The editor warns when an element crosses the printable width or the bottom of a fixed-size label. Trust those warnings — they are computed from the same numbers the printer uses.
